Intimacy Coordination

For Screen and Stage

Collaboration

Co-creating Sensitive Sets

Robert centres collaboration in his intimacy coordination work so that as well ensuring artists’ needs and boundaries are met, the director and whole production team are also supported to bring the stories to life with the kind of creativity that can only flourish when safety and comfort is accounted for.

EXPERIENCE

INTEGRATING YEARS OF PRACTICE INTO HIS ROLE AS AN IC

Robert trained at the National Film and Television School (NFTS) as part of the inaugural Intimacy Coordination for Film & TV course, led by Haley Muraleedharan. With nearly 30 years of experience in theatre as a performer, teacher, and movement specialist, he brings a deep well of expertise to his role as a certified Intimacy Coordinator.

Robert’s practice is grounded in attentive, compassionate collaboration. His approach centres on meeting each individual where they are—ensuring work is not imposed but instead arises authentically from the performer. Drawing from his rich background in movement and improvisation, Robert supports environments where scenes of intimacy are created safely, sensitively, and with artistic integrity.

His work is deeply informed by a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with a particular passion for stories that amplify working-class and queer voices. He has extensive experience working with young and early-career actors (ages 18–25), helping to foster confidence and trust on set and in rehearsal rooms. Robert stands alongside a growing network of Intimacy Coordinators who champion consent-led practices in the industry. He honours the foundational work of pioneers in the field who have paved the way for a safer, more respectful creative process.

EXPLAINER

WHAT IS INTIMACY COORDINATION AND WHY IS IT NECESSARY?

Intimacy Coordination is a professional practice that ensures scenes involving intimacy—such as simulated sex, nudity, touch, or emotionally vulnerable content—are approached with clear communication, mutual consent, and creative integrity. An Intimacy Coordinator works closely with actors, directors, and production teams to choreograph intimate moments in a way that protects performers’ physical and emotional boundaries, while still serving the story. An Intimacy Coordinator works closely with actors, directors, and production teams to choreograph intimate moments in a way that protects performers’ physical and emotional boundaries, while still serving the story. The role combines elements of movement direction, safeguarding, and facilitation, helping to create a safe and respectful working environment on set or in rehearsal. Ultimately, Intimacy Coordination empowers performers, supports directors, and promotes ethical, professional standards across the creative industries.

Training

The nfts certification in intimacy coordination

The NFTS Intimacy Coordination certification programme was an intensive six-month programme designed to meet the evolving needs of the UK screen industries. Robert was part of the inaugural cohort. Delivered by the National Film and Television School, the training focused on best practices for creating safe, consent-based environments for intimate scenes in film and television. Over the course of 150 training hours (including 90 contact hours), Robert worked closely with industry professionals and mentors, engaging in practical workshops, simulated on-set scenarios, and portfolio development. The training supported the development of his unique choreographic style while deepening his understanding of professional standards and protocols. The programme concluded with a final assessment and independent portfolio review, equipping Robert with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as a certified Intimacy Coordinator.

Robert loves to work with stories that centre working class and LGBTQIA+ narratives.
